Date: 09/15/2012
Incident Number: 12-0055209
Information Contact: Kris McDonald, Battalion Chief
Incident Type: Gasoline leak from damaged vehicle
Date/Time of Incident: 09/12/2012 19:28-22:19 hours
Incident Location: E Harbor Blvd / San Jon Rd, Ventura
Cause: See below
Injuries: None
Number of Personnel: 4
Fire Equipment: 1 Paramedic Engine, 1 Command
Agencies Involved: Ventura City Fire Department, California State Parks
Narrative: Fire Department personnel responded to a report of a high-centered vehicle with
a ruptured fuel tank, leaking gasoline. Upon arrival at the scene personnel took immediate
action to control the release of leaking fuel, preventing it from entering a nearby watershed.
Multiple units from a private towing company were required to safely remove the vehicle
from its location, lodged on top of a small boulder, and to prevent an even larger release of
fuel from the tank. After the vehicle was successfully removed and loaded onto a flat bed
tow truck, several attempts were made by Fire Personnel to patch the damaged tank. Since
the leak could not be fixed on site, the damaged tank had to be completely emptied of fuel,
approximately 10 gallons, before the vehicle could be safely transported. All spilled fuel was
contained, absorbed, and removed, thus alleviating any potential environmental impact.
