Location: RR tracks West of the Ventura River Trail (Ventura River train trestle)
Date/Time Occurred: 09/08/12 @ 1716 hrs

Narrative:
On the above date and time, the Ventura Police Command Center was notified by Amtrak dispatch regarding a pedestrian being struck by an Amtrak train on the railroad tracks near the Ventura River. Officers arrived on scene and found the victim lying underneath the train. Ventura Fire and AMR personnel also responded and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
According to the train conductor the southbound train was travelling at approximately 40 mph as it approached the Amtrak station near the Ventura County Fairgrounds, when the victim was scene walking northbound on the tracks over the Ventura River train trestle. The conductor began sounding the warning horn, but the victim appeared to be looking down at a cell phone and did not make any attempts to get off of the tracks. All emergency attempts were made to stop the train, but the train did not stop in time and struck the victim.
Ventura County Medical Examiner responded to the scene. The cause of death will be determined at a later date. The name of the victim is being withheld until the victim's family can be notified.
The train was delayed at the scene for approximately two hours while the investigation was being completed.
