FUNKY FRIDAY

Funky Friday
updated: Aug 19, 2011, 7:34 AM

By Ventura Edhat staff

The sight of this movie marquee from a bygone era sitting alone in this empty lot is an odd spectacle, making it our Funky Friday pick this week. The marquee once proudly invited movie goers into Mayfair Theater on the corner of Ash and Santa Clara. The art-deco style theater was designed by architect, S. Charles Lee, and built in 1940. In its declining years the Mayfair operated as the Pussycat Theater and was eventually demolished in August 2004 after a fire rendered it unusable. More photos of the Mayfair can be found at http://mayfairtheatre.com/gallery.html.

It looks so cool! I love old antique things like that. Also, nice bit of history included, I would have never known.

It seems like a good item to be restored and used as a marquee for an independent theatre.

Wasn't the Pussycat theater in downtown Ventura?

Yes, Senorita Sunshine, the Pussycat theater was the fate (or honor, if you see it that way) of the Mayfair in it's later years.
