WHERE IS IT?

Wednesday Where Is It
updated: Jul 27, 2011, 6:33 AM

By Ventura Edhat staff

The shell-shaped flute in this week's Wednesday Where Is It photo is part of a 25 ft bronze sculpture located at Soter Point in Marina Park. The flute is being played by a mermaid "rising from the sea" as she welcomes boats leaving and entering Ventura Harbor. The sculpture was donated to the city by a Russian immigrant and was the crowning jewel in the restoration of the west point of Marina Park, renamed Soter Point. The project was headed up by Andy Soter in honor of his daughter, Andrea, who tragically died at the age of 47. Soter Point is now one of Ventura's most beautiful spots, with benches, gazebos and views of both the blue Pacific in one direction and a peaceful Marina in the other. Here's more on the story of the mermaid sculpture.
