If you recognized these bronze toes as belonging to Father Junipero Serra, you were right! Unveiled in 1936, the original cement statue was placed in front of Ventura City Hall to honor the founder of the Mission. Due to weatherization, the cement statue was the replaced in 1989 by the bronze statue that overlooks our “city of good fortune” today. San Buenaventura Mission was the 9th and final mission founded by the priest. With Chumash labor, the mission once expanded from its present location to the Ventura River and contained a prolific garden of fruit, vegetables and herbs.
