Cheap Coffee Drinker
updated: May 21, 2011, 10:00 AM

Dear Edda,

My co-worker and I walk to Starbucks every morning, where she orders a large latte, and I order a large coffee. She always complains about the price, and says it's just too expensive to live in this town.

I try to tell her that I'm ordering the same thing that she is - just that my milk and sugar is free, but she continues to order the latte and complain.

Signed,

Cheap Coffee Drinker

Point out that she could give up coffee, bring in her own tea bag and just order a cup of hot water and lemon wedge. That'd save her plenty of $

Starbucks coffee is NOT the same everywhere.

Tell her to go to Peet's for a real cup of coffee, or latte.

She could always go to McDonalds. They are cheaper and he coffee is pretty good
Then there's the dreaded work coffee pot that sits on the burner all day. That'll curl your toes.

i agree on peet's coffee. starbucks puts me to sleep. another trick is ordering a triple espresso on ice and putting your own milk and sugar in it. i get out of there for 2.40 or so and they will put it in any size glass you want.

How about she spends $15 on a travel thermos, brings her own coffee in the morning, and uses the money she saves to take a vacation in a less expensive town?

Hopefully your friend will be part of those "raptured" and you wont have to deal with this come Monday

Or maybe you could quit picking on your friend and just be a sounding board instead of a whiner

Or you could make your Starbucks stop on your way in to work and skip the trip with the coworker.

Point out to her that a little splurge every morning can make the rest of the day magical. And tell her that you are sure that she is worth $1,000 a year in treats.

What are friends for if not to suck up to each other?

...how lucky you two are that you can walk to work, hot coffee in hand.

I like your attitude Seedlady. Try to see the good in all and be grateful for what you have!

Forget Starbuck's AND Peet's and go to The French Press!!!! BUY LOCAL!!! Support real live local people. Mom and Pop, all the way! And yes, Seedlady, what a wonderful observation. We are so very lucky indeed for those things. :-)

As a former daily Starbucks consumer, I can tell you that it costs a good deal more in both Las Vegas and in Salt Lake City - where everything else is cheaper, by the way. New York is also more expensive. So I am sure there are plenty of other places. But for this one thing, Santa Barbara is not the most expensive, and I find that interesting.
