Check Fraud Suspects Wanted for Questioning
updated: Mar 16, 2017, 9:57 AM

Source: Santa Barbara Police Department

The two females depicted in the above surveillance photographs are suspects in numerous check fraud cases within the cities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, Ventura, and Oxnard.

According to statements provided by the victims, the females are approaching bank customers and asking for their assistance in cashing a check on their behalf. The females plead with the victims, claiming they cannot cash the check themselves as they do not have identification and/or are not clients of the bank. In each of the abovementioned cases, the checks they are requesting to be cashed were stolen from a mailbox prior.

If you have any information or can identify the females, please contact Detective DeBlauw with the Santa Barbara Police Department at (805) 897-2327 / adeblauw@sbpd.com or call anonymously to (805) 897- 2386.

I wonder if one of these women is "Amanda Lunsdford" My rent check was stolen from my mailbox in January and cashed at a BofA (I bank with Chase). The back of my check was endorsed "Pay to the Order of Amanda Lunsdford" and then a signature that does not look like mine, my landlord's, nor the name of the endorser "Amanda". Chase is still investigating it with BofA and I still don't have my money back

Good photos but very possibly not local. They could be from LA or Timbuktu and no one will recognize them. Bummer they can get away with this ugly scam. SHOREBIRD got it right!

Who would be stupid enough to cash a check for a stranger?

My suggestion, shouldn't cancel out people needing to use common sense. However it would benefit the banks, to train tellers to be a little more proactive with customers when this situations arises. A simple, "There has been a lot of check frauds lately, do you personally know X because if this check is fraudulent you are on the hook buddy"

I'm surprised banks are still accepting second-party checks, even for deposit. My credit union stopped doing it years ago for this very reason.

wow - double whammy! 1) Steal a check from someone (like 789 described) anonymously, then 2) Seek someone empathic & helpful & Robbing them in person while thanking them for their help.

Desperate. These gals needed a mother very very much (Peter Pan ref).

I have seen this before. Likely, their older "boyfriends" are the ones that not only committed the thefts but have pressured or "talked" them into risking their faces, reputations, and futures to fraudulently cash the checks. Further, it may be the reason that these two young women have taken NO basic steps to hide or alter their appearances - though they are no angels, they are clearly inexperienced and trusted the instruction of others. It will be interesting to have an update and learn, at the end of the day, what the story ends up actually being.

891, whenever I go into my bank I always smile at the cameras just let them know I know that I am being recorded. Of course I am not in there for nefarious reasons like these two.
