New Mural at Downtown Restaurant

In March 2014 Yuji Horii, the owner of the Banzai (formerly Marina) Sushi
restaurant on S. California Street, approached the city about painting a mural
inspired by The Great Wave, by renown Japanese artist Hokusai on the building
housing his business. He was excited about the prospect of working with a local
artist Daniel Elam to improve the aesthetics of the property and signify to
customers that the business was operating under new ownership.
Mr. Horii anticipated a lengthy and laborious process and was pleasantly
surprised when his mural proposal was approved on June 10th by the Public Art
Commission, with just one public hearing. Public Art program staff worked
closely with Mr. Horii to ensure that he had all of the necessary forms,
background documentation and signed support letters included in his submittal,
thus leading to a successful, affordable and streamlined approval process.
The Public Art Commission is encouraging private property owners interested in
working with local artists to enhance their buildings with art to apply by going
and downloading the mural design approval guidelines.
