Narrative: Ventura City Firefighters responded Monday evening to a residential structure fire in West Ventura, located in the 100 block of Shoshone St. Firefighters met concerned residents at the front door while water was flowing onto the street -- originating from the third floor of the home.

A fire alarm had activated and the residents, who were home at the time, suspected a problem in the attic space. Firefighters gained access to the attic and located a small fire. The heat from the flames fractured a water line in the attic and partially extinguished the fire, yet flooded the home. Firefighters opened the adjacent walls-- further extinguishing the fire, and used thermal imaging to ensure the fire was not traveling inside the walls, while crews shut off the water supply to the home.

Firefighters secured utilities and started property salvage operations. House furnishings were placed in areas safe from flooding, water was diverted to the outside, and multiple large commercial vacuums were used to evacuate remaining water and mitigate further damage. The source and cause of the fire is under investigation. The Ventura City Fire Department would like to remind everyone to ensure they have property working smoke detectors.
