Narrative:
On 01-02-13, at approximately 6:17 AM, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office Communication Center
(SCC) received a call from an unidentified person. The caller indicated that they were holding several
people hostage at the La Quinta Inn in Newbury Park. The caller threatened to injure the hostages and
responding emergency services personnel.
Specialized Units with the Thousand Oaks Police Department, Ventura County Sheriff's Office, Ventura
County Fire Department, and other agencies responded to the call and initially handled the situation.
During the incident and ensuing investigation, It was determined that the entire incident was a hoax,
therefore no threat to public safety.
The East County Major Crimes Unit with the assistance of other agencies are currently investigating the
incident. These types of incidents utilize precious resources which could be otherwise used for
legitimate calls in the community. Law Enforcement would like to emphasize that these types of events
are taken seriously and are a felony crime in the State of California, subject to prosecution.

Ventura County Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 reward for information, which leads to the arrest
and criminal complaint against the person(s) responsible for this crime. The caller may remain
