Santa Barbara Beekeepers Association presents…Sweet Start!
A honey bee, without a colony, is doomed. So, too, is a teen without a sense of belonging. Our vision is
to help at-
risk youth by providing them with a "colony" of caring adults.
The vision of Sweet Start is to provide students with quality coaching and job training that will give them
experience
and confidence for a future career path. Those willing to make a commitment to themselves, the bees,
and the
community will receive pre-job training to apply for an internship through the Partners in Education
Internship
Program. Those selected will be matched with a S.B. Beekeeper Association mentor to learn the unique
art of
beekeeping.
Interns will work in teams to create a business and marketing plan, and will sell honey products at local
farmers
markets. All interns will be compensated for their training and work. Proceeds from the product sales
will support
Sweet Start interns in successive years. Sweet Start graduates will be offered continued support through
a business
startup stipend and career mentoring.
With a recent Grant Commitment from the Fund for Santa Barbara, matching funds from Santa Barbara
Beekeepers
Association and the support of Dr. David E. Cash, S.B. Unified School District Superintendent, our vision
will now be
realized with the selection of the first five students/trainees from La Cuesta Continuation High School to
enroll in this
program beginning in December, 2012.
